Attic Insulation and Ventilation: Why They Are Vital

Ice or frost on your roof's decking are a bad sign. Here is an example of why proper insulation and ventilation are vital. This is from an attic we were called out to assess.

Pictured is an example of what can happen when insulation is covering your soffit vents, you have a lack of ventilation and/or your home's humidifier is set too high. (State recommendations for a whole house humidifier's setting is no more than 33%)

Your roof decking, which is normally cdx plywood or OSB (oriented strand board), is installed on top of the supporting sub-structure which your roof is applied on. When hot and cold air meet in your attic, this causes moisture and condensation.

When you have a lack of, or improperly installed insulation and/or inefficient ventilation, you are creating an environment for mold and mildew. Also, make sure that your bathroom ceiling exhaust fans are properly vented out of your attic. This is often a contributing factor in the cause of mildew attaching itself to the underside of your roof deck.

Moisture will saturate your roof deck which will act as a sponge, and you will ultimately be forced to replace your roof and the decking, which could be very costly to you.

Don't wait until it's too late. It is vital to maintain your home's air flow to avoid costly issues. ABC Roofing does FREE attic inspections and can help you determine if you are at risk.
