US Navy veteran, Robert Nichols was chosen as the recipient of a free roof through our “Free Roof for a Veteran or Service Member” promotion presented by ABC Roofing Company, Certainteed and Reese Wholesale. His story truly embodies some of the struggles our veterans face each day.
In November, 1992, Mr. Nichols joined the US Navy as a Naval Nuclear Power Electronic Technician. During his time on the USS Nimitz he worked with nuclear power and was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. At that time, Mr. Nichols was placed on “Medical Hold” while he received treatment. Treatment consisted of radiation therapy which ultimately lead to additional health issues. At the age of 27, he suffered a minor stroke and at just 34 years old, a heart attack as a result of damage caused by radiation treatments. The treatments also resulted in damage to Mr. Nichols’ lungs. He was honorably discharged in 1999.
Mr. Nichols secured employment after his time in the Navy where he was employed for 11 years. In 2012, he was re-diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and began chemotherapy treatments. These treatments caused additional damage to his heart, were discontinued 2 months early and in June, 2013, open heart surgery was performed. Three months after open heart surgery, sadly, Mr. Nichols was laid off. Since then he has been “underemployed” and most recently lost his health insurance leaving he and his family responsible for medical bills.
In addition to his struggles, Mr. Nichols was also badly in need of a new roof but could not afford the cost. It brings us great joy to provide him with a new roof at no cost to ease some of the burden he and his family have endured. Since being chosen as the recipient, we’ve had the pleasure of spoking with the Nichols family multiple times. Their outlook and positivity are truly inspiring. Now, they can sleep well at night knowing they have one less thing to worry about. Thank you for your service Mr. Nichols! We salute you.
ABC Roofing Company, Certainteed and Reese Wholesale value our veterans, service members and their families. We’d like to thank all of the veterans and service members who sent us their stories. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. We will continue to honor and pray for you each day.
