When preparing our homes for each season we don't often consider attic insulation. It's like the old saying, 'Out of sight out of mind'. We don't think about popping our heads up to peak at our attic insulation, maybe because we simply don't realize its importance. Let's be honest, many of us have never even seen the inside of our attics.
Why is Attic Insulation Important?
Attic insulation is important for many reasons. The most obvious are energy loss and energy efficiency.
Heat Loss:
Heat rises. If your home isn't properly insulated, the heat from inside leaks into the attic so you're losing the majority of your heat, essentially over working your system. This may not seem like a big deal but it leads to higher energy bills and ultimately puts more strain on your furnace, which is costly to repair or replace.
Warmer Months (Summer/Fall):
When temperatures are warmer outside, heat from the sun penetrates your roof making the attic unbearably hot. Adequate attic insulation will prevent the cold air from your home's A/C from escaping into the hot attic but also keeps the hot air from possibly seeping down into your home. It keeps the hot and cold air where they're supposed to be, keeps your inside temperature steady, and prevents the amount of work tour A/C has to put in.
R-Value:
R-Value is a measure of thermal resistance, or the ability to prevent the transfer of heat. Many think just by adding a little attic insulation that they've achieved their goal of energy efficiency. It's also important that you have the right amount attic insulation.
In the State of Indiana, recommended R-Value is 'R38', or atleast 12-17 inches of insulation. The higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. Some contractors may try to sell you on just "topping it off" but a little insulation will not get you a long way.
Installing your attic isn't something you'll want to trust just anyone to do. Hiring the right contractor is essential. An experienced contractor knows the importance of checking things such as proper ventilation and ensuring your soffit vents aren't clogged during an insulation job, among other things.
