When Is It Too Cold To Roof? (Asphalt Shingles)

Updated: Jan 20, 2022

We've had many calls lately regarding roofing in the winter. "Is it too cold to roof my house?" Or, "I want to wait until Spring."

While it's true, during colder months it may take the roof a little more time to "seal" or for shingles to "lie down" you can still have your roof replaced. The heat and light from the sun still hit your roof, allowing that seal to occur.

There are many things on the internet on whether or not to have your roof replaced during colder months. The truth is, there is no right or wrong answer. There are, however, proper and improper techniques, safety guidelines for the crews and a little common sense. Any good contractor should know the difference.

For example, the contractor should always look for ice or hazardous conditions on the roof. You want to keep your crew safe. Temperature is a major factor as well. If it is below freezing then your crew is at the mercy of the elements and should wait for a warmer day to be on the roof.

There are some who advise against asphalt shingle application during colder months because the "shingles are susceptible to breaking". Asphalt shingles are exposed to the elements all of the time-they are, after all, on your roof 365 days of the year, rain or shine. They're built for this. Proper installation and handling of the materials make all the difference. Some manufacturers have "cold weather application" recommendations for nailing patterns on ridge vent to ensure that they are secured while the sealant adheres. Our crews are highly trained to ensure that great care is taken during the install of your roof.

Things such as ice and water barrier are very important as well. This protects your roofs decking and adds a special layer of protection to help prevent leaks. We recommend this no matter what the season.

It really is all about personal preference and the comfort of the home owner. At ABC Roofing, we've been doing this for a long time and want our customers to feel confident that their roof is in good hands. Call us today for your FREE roofing estimate and one of our knowledgeable team members would be happy to discuss any questions or concerns.
